East Lansing, MI (September 21, 2019)—
Today marks the 40th anniversary of the approval of the American Board of Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Medical Specialties. September 21, 1979 Emergency Medicine became the 23rd recognized medical specialty.
Many men and women worked intensely to establish the specialty of Emergency Medicine, setting high standards and then continuously striving to improve those standards. The efforts of all emergency physicians continue to raise the standard of the specialty,
making Emergency Medicine a model of excellence within the house of medicine.
Your excellence and dedication is why Emergency Medicine is what it is today. Thank you and congratulations!
ABEM will celebrate its 40th anniversary throughout the upcoming year by sharing stories from emergency physicians to recognize your great accomplishments in advancing our specialty and caring for people at a critical time in their lives. We would like
you tell us about:
- Someone who influenced you, inspired you, or taught you to become the physician you are today
- What influenced you to choose Emergency Medicine
- How Emergency Medicine has evolved since you entered the specialty
