The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and the American Board of Osteopathic Emergency Medicine (AOBEM) along with all Emergency Medicine organizations call for an immediate suspension of additional certifications or short courses, such as BLS, ACLS, PALS, ATLS, needed to obtain or maintain hospital privileges during the COVID-19 pandemic.
ABEM and AOBEM certification eliminates the need for such merit badges at any time, but particularly during the health care crisis our nation is facing. Eliminating such hospital privileging requirements, even if only on a temporary basis, will allow available emergency physicians to help hospitals address surge capacity or provider illnesses at a time when granting privileges is time-sensitive and critical.
